A bank destroys 16 partially built homes to end government fines. It’s too bad the government didn’t stop the fines and donate the homes to the homeless.
Our society's biggest short-term problem is we have too many places to live. It should be a good problem to have.

It's too bad the government didn't use some of the money allocated for buying up houses in distressed neighborhoods (which is actually being used as a desperate attempt to keep housing prices inflated in those areas), and buy up some of the houses which it's apparently cheaper for the banks to destroy than bring up to code. It's almost certainly cheaper to bring them up to code and use them as subsidized housing for the homeless than to buy and fix up houses in other neighborhoods: after all, these houses should be close to free (purchase-price wise). No need for anyone to donate anything, this is just another failure of local government to capitalize on an obvious opportunity to not waste quite as much money trying to keep housing unaffordable.
